TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In response to Governor DeSantis’ call for a special session to pursue mid-decade redistricting after the 2026 Legislative Session, the League of Women Voters of Florida President Jessica Lowe-Minor issued the following statement.
“Calling a special session to pursue partisan mid-decade redistricting is an affront to Florida voters. In 2010, 62% of Floridians approved the Fair Districts Amendments, effectively showing career politicians that Floridians have a deep stake in keeping our elections fair and free from partisan influence.
“Despite what other states like Texas, California, or Louisiana may do, Florida has an explicit prohibition on partisan map making, and Florida legislators have all sworn an oath to support and defend both the U.S. and Florida Constitutions. Section 20 of our State Constitution states, ‘In establishing congressional district boundaries, no apportionment plan or individual district shall be drawn with the intent to favor or disfavor a political party or an incumbent.’
“Not only will a special session cost precious taxpayer money, but it also ignores the overwhelming majority of Florida voters who have said loudly and clearly that they do not want districts redrawn for political purposes. Florida residents expect their elected leaders to focus on the kitchen table issues affecting voters’ daily lives, not diverting millions in taxpayer dollars to a rushed and unconstitutional redistricting process.”
