For years, state politicians have given tax breaks to corporations and special interests, benefiting the wealthy at everyone else's expense. Meanwhile...
  • Florida spends less than most other states on public education
  • Millions of Floridians don’t have health insurance coverage
  • The state underfunds services for the elderly and public safety
  • The state has cut millions from our water management districts and environmental protections
THIS MUST CHANGE!
BUT AMENDMENT 5 WOULD MAKE CHANGE PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE. It will saddle Floridians with an unfair tax system and the inability to adequately fund essential programs, including natural disaster response for hurricanes and situations like our current red tide crisis, as well as relief in economic downturns.
AMENDMENT 5 CREATES AN OBSTRUCTIONIST SUPER-MINORITY!
service
Right now, it only takes a simple majority in both houses of the State Legislature to close corporate tax loopholes and raise taxes. But Amendment 5 would require a 2/3 super-majority, empowering a handful of bought-and-paid-for politicians to hold us all hostage.
AMENDMENT 5 IS BAD NEWS FOR OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS!
service
At a time when we desperately need to increase funding for Florida schools, this amendment will prevent that—and likely lead to further education budget cuts. Oklahoma passed a similar measure and saw $180 million in education cuts over a decade. We must invest more in our kids, teachers, and schools!
AMENDMENT 5 JEOPARDIZES AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE!
service
Florida ranks 46th in the US for number of residents with health insurance coverage. Super-minority control of revenue will ensure there's no opportunity to improve this. State lawmakers have a record of cutting Medicaid, too; if a simple majority can't increase revenue, this will continue, risking the well-being of 4 million Floridians who depend on Medicaid.
AMENDMENT 5 THREATENS OUR ENVIRONMENT!
service
Red Tide and Green slime: Florida faces an epic fight to save our bays, Gulf and Atlantic beaches, springs, rivers and wildlife. Our current crisis has killed thousands of tons of marine life and devastated businesses across the state. Fixing this problem requires a significant public investment. One that will be difficult to make if Amendment 5 is passed.
