Ice Cream Social and Voting!
VP/Membership Chair, LWV of Broward County
Who knew that ice cream and politics went together so well?! Ben & Jerry’s — a company that has long been concerned with preserving voting rights for all Americans — certainly did and that is why they so generously agreed to partner with our nonpartisan League!
On July 14 about 90 League members, their families, prospective members, and other guests came to the River of Grass Unitarian Universalist Congregation to enjoy Ben & Jerry’s special ice cream and sorbet flavors, while learning about how the League of Women Voters of Broward County would Get Out the Vote for the 2018 August Primary and Midterm November General Election.
Welcoming remarks by League President Bradette Jepsen included a reminder to one of our target groups for the primary election — Non-Party Affiliated Voters — of the need to re-register by July 30 to vote in party elections and certainly to vote on August 28 for the ballot issues open to all voters, even if party affiliation was not changed.
The Broward League proudly displayed its new image, complete with banners, tablecloths, and buttons. Each guest received a necklace with a double-sided QR code tag, which would allow quick and ready access to both our League website and the Vote411.org Voter Information website. Voter Registration, Say Yes to Amendment 4, information about upcoming candidate and judicial forums were available on various tables for members and guests to peruse.
The very talented young jazz singer, Francesca Winer, sang a number of tunes for a captive audience, and added something very special to the afternoon get together.
The Ice Cream Social Kick-Off was a great success! The new job board has been posted as a link on our website. The QR code necklaces have become a special request “swag” item which we take to events and speaking engagements to give away and promote our League, as well as VOTE411.org. We also were thrilled to welcome EIGHT talented new individuals to the Broward League.
