President, LWV of Tallahassee
Suffragists, Lady Liberty, and Uncle Sam had fun staffing the 8 Mile mark at the Tallahassee Marathon on February 4. League of Women Voters of Tallahassee members supplied water, Gatorade, snacks, and band-aides to the runners. The full race was 26.2 miles, all around Tallahassee early on a rainy Sunday morning. Those who finished could vote for their favorite water station.
Our location was at the corner of Golf Terrace and Thornall Drive. The runners coming from the direction of the Country Club, running along the boulevard could see all our “Burma Shave” type signs with League slogans. We had patriotic music playing and little flags waving to encourage the runners. Our job was to get water cups handed out very quickly as the runners pass and to be enthusiastic.
Our original costumes (many thanks to Dot Skofronick) is what won us the acclaim of the runners so we got top prize of $500.
One of the runners was so impressed by all of us that she wrote about us on our Facebook page after the race: ‘Thank you for the awesome race volunteers at the Tallahassee Marathon this morning! Your group was amazing, we loved the costumes, the signs, the support, and the drinks. I spent the next two miles thinking of all the work out there left to do for women’s issues and thankful there are groups like this doing the hard work. Thank you for all you do,’ said Melissa ‘Missy’ Flynn Raffensperger.
Missy, we are inspired by runners like you – see you next year!
Also, after the race the runners voted on the best water station and we won first prize ($500) for the third year in a row!
