Women’s Reproductive Rights Threatened by State Statutes on the Rights of a Fetus

Posted on December 30, 2018

A Woman’s Rights, is an eye-openning, multi-part New York Times editorial, that warns of existing state laws being used to prosecute women for medical emergencies resulting in a fetal death.  The laws of at least 38 states that treat the fetus as a potential crime victim, separate and apart from its mother, are discussed in the context of Roe vs Wade.

The series of Editorials on this subject outline the creation of the legal scaffolding for the idea that the fetus is a person has been the steady work of the anti-abortion movement, at the national level and in every state.

The League of Women Voters of Florida supports every woman’s right to access affordable, high-quality reproductive health care, including access to abortion services and birth control.  We affirm that public policy in a pluralistic society must affirm the constitutional right to privacy of the individual to make reproductive choices.
